For consumer support, companies need to map the motivations for long term integrity and dedication. IFF (International Flavors & Fragrances Inc.) science and creativity for a better world is a globally active firm devoted to creating tailored flavors and scents used in the beauty, processed foods, beverages, confectionery products, baked goods, pharmaceuticals, and many other areas. It has one of the largest research and development efforts so if any company is going to set a good example, this is surely one.
Christina Forst, Global Sustainability Manager, at IFF, shared with me some of the companies’ beliefs and how they are making a difference one policy at a time.
A vertically integrated supply chain
IFF works closely with their partners to develop traceable and environmental conscious supply chains and sourcing platforms. They can accurately trace the flow of raw materials, helping farmers build a bridge from crop to consumer in an inviolable manner that increases trust, transparency and financial security. This combined with their Fair for Life certified optimization program and community support activities, helps support a sustainable supply chain that is improving the livelihoods of local farmers and their families.
Environmental protection
IFF takes significant steps to support environmental protection by lightening the footprint of their own operations around the world. They are committed to climate action and power. More than 50% of IFF’s operations’ electricity requirements is with renewable energy. In 2021, they were recognized as a triple A list company (one of only 14 companies out of nearly 12,000 assessed). For corporate transparency and action on climate change, water stewardship and deforestation.
Committing to biodiversity
In 2020, IFF joined more than 560 companies during Climate Week NYC in signing Business for Nature’s Call to Action. Urging governments to protect biodiversity and adopt ambitious policies to reverse nature loss this decade. Their commitment to responsible sourcing means they strive to improve the quality of life in farming communities, helping to make them more stable, resilient and prosperous. This includes supporting biodiversity.
Green chemistry and how it’s innovating science
Green chemistry is crucial to evolution. IFF is leveraging their green chemistry principles to pioneer the development of new up-cycled ingredients as part of their environmentally conscious and vertically integrated supply chains around the world. IFF has developed the Upcycled Extracts Collection, an ingredients portfolio that utilizes several types of waste: harvest byproducts, such as seeds. Spent extraction material, such as pulp; or side streams from processing facilities, such as wastewater.
